Unity Insurance provides the following information about Public Liability Cover when renting a hall from a third party (School/Church, etc.)
How does the Scout Public Liability policy operate when renting a hall from a third party (school, church, etc.)? Who is insured for what?
The third party from whom you rent property will have their Public Liability insurance. This relates to their land and assets, which are used to protect individuals who use the properties. Groups renting properties for scouting activities must ensure all Activities are risk-assessed within POR.
We asked the following question:-
Does this mean the third-party venue must have £5 million in PLI, as per the activity instruction?
I understand that the building and grounds must be covered on the 3rd party's PLI, but UNITY does not specify a minimum level of cover.
The HQ Safety Team came back with the following:-
I am not aware of any minimum level of coverage that has been set. However, it is standard practice to pay a minimum of £5m, and this amount will depend on what they are doing or offering. For example, a theme park would have a different level of cover than a church hall. As there is no minimum set, I would suggest it’s up to you (the trustee board of the group) to consider if you are happy with the landlord’s processes and the cover that is in place
